Towel names are unhelpfully vague. A bath towel in one shop is a bath sheet in another, American sizes run larger than European ones, and almost nobody prints the centimetres where you can see them before you buy.
So here is what the names mean in Europe, what each size is genuinely for, and how many of each a household needs.
The short answer. A European bath towel is around 70 x 140 cm and suits most adults for everyday use. A bath sheet is roughly 90 x 150 cm or larger, better for wrapping and for taller people, but heavier, slower to dry and harder to manage in a small bathroom. Hand towels sit around 50 x 90 cm, face cloths around 30 x 50 cm. For one person: two bath towels, two hand towels, two face cloths, one bath mat.
What are the standard towel sizes?
These are the sizes you will meet in most European shops. Individual brands vary by a few centimetres either way, which is normal.

Bath sheet or bath towel: which should you buy?
A bath sheet is not simply a better bath towel. It is a different trade, and worth understanding before you spend more on one.
What you gain is real. You can wrap it fully around you rather than clutching it closed. It is more comfortable if you are tall, if you have long hair, or if you like to sit for a while before dressing. Out of the water on a cold morning, that extra fabric is genuinely nicer.
What you give up is also real, and it is rarely mentioned. A bath sheet holds noticeably more water, so it is heavier to handle when wet and slower to dry. It takes up more of the washing machine, which means fewer towels per load. And it needs more rail. In a small bathroom with one narrow radiator, a bath sheet folded double will still be damp the next morning, which is exactly the condition that makes towels smell.
The practical test is not your body. It is your bathroom. Go and look at the rail you actually have, measure it, and be honest about how much space that towel will get between showers. A 70 x 140 that dries properly beats a 90 x 150 that never quite does.

How many towels do you need per person?
Fewer than most people own, and in a better rotation.
- Two bath towels. One in use, one clean. This is the whole trick: it means no towel ever has to be picked up while still damp.
- Two hand towels. They get changed most often, so two is the minimum that avoids a gap.
- Two face cloths. These go in the wash after every use, so you need the spare.
- One bath mat per bathroom, washed weekly. A second one is useful if your bathroom has no window.
- Two guest bath towels per household. Not per guest. Kept in a cupboard, used a few times a year.
Buying beyond that does not make laundry easier. It lets you postpone it, which is a different thing, and it is usually how a linen cupboard ends up full of towels nobody likes.
What size towel for children?
A hand towel at 50 x 90 cm is enough for a small child and much easier for them to handle than a full bath towel dragging on a wet floor. From around seven or eight, most children manage a standard bath towel fine.
Hooded baby towels are a genuinely useful shape for the first couple of years, and then they stop being useful quite quickly. Two is plenty.
Does size change how absorbent a towel is?
Only in total. A bigger towel holds more water because there is more of it, not because the fabric performs better. Absorbency per square centimetre comes from the fibre and the loop construction, not from the outline.
This matters when you are comparing prices. A large towel in a mediocre quality will feel worse against the skin than a smaller one made properly, even though it costs more and weighs more.
